Scope and Nature of Geomatics (Surveying) Engineering
In recent years, the scope and nature of Geomatics (Cartography) Engineering have advanced significantly, particularly with the use of space and information technologies. Geomatics Engineering is a scientific discipline concerned with the measurement of spatial and physical parameters of objects that make up the Earth and Space using advanced engineering methods, the storage of this data in databases, its analysis, and the presentation of final products. Geomatics Engineering employs a wide range of measurement techniques, from satellite-based radio waves to micron-level laser and optical measurements.
Among the subjects covered by Geomatics Engineering, which is among the fastest-growing technological sectors in the world, are:
These disciplines have numerous applications in various fields.
Due to its broad scope, Geomatics Engineers can work in various institutions in both the private and public sectors. There are approximately 20,000 Geomatics Engineers registered with the Chamber of Survey and Cadastre Engineers (HKMO). The increasing number of urban transformation projects, along with infrastructure projects such as dams, highways, and railways, has increased demand for graduates in this field. Moreover, rapid advancements in space and information technologies have extended the scope of work for Geomatics Engineers far beyond traditional cartography, both in our country and in developed nations.
Geomatics Engineers can find employment in a variety of private sector companies, including:
Geomatics Engineering graduates can also find employment in various government institutions, including:
